In the coolness of the morning…
I put seven pounds of carrots through the food processor in order to turn them into carrot cake for the 4th of July, and carrot hummus for a healthy evening snack to enjoy with homegrown cucumbers.
In the heat of the afternoon…
I teach my daughter and her friends how to pick peaches, how to provide a field report to the grower on the status of his grapes, how to enjoy traipsing around a farm among the multiplicity of dogs, cats and ducks, how to be an optimist in the face of a pessimistic grower and how to enjoy the fruit of your labor.
In the quite of the evening…
I read journal articles and snack on my newly acquired grapes, prepare dinner that includes sliced tomatoes and grilled pepper strips for our sandwiches, and freeze the carrots I didn’t quite use.
On a Sunday afternoon…
I come home and hear, “Mom, I used every single small tomato I could find – I didn’t use your big Cherokee Purples – to cook dinner. I made this tomato vodka cream sauce for some pasta. Here, taste it!…I also used your thyme and basil…” Holy exploding taste buds, Rass, that was good! I walk outside and take down my Sage smudging bunches that are now dry and hang them on my fireplace tool rack.
Before I go to bed…
I thank God for His bounty. His perfect, nutritious, lovely, delicious bounty. And then I sleep deeply.
Love, RDK
P.S. This frog hopped from Mick’s shoulder to my tummy on the 4th of July. I think he liked us…
