Silent Sunday: Gardens and Farmer’s Markets in Oklahoma

Jonathan Apples from Livesay Orchard in Porter, OK ~ at the Urban Agrarian stand, Farmer's Market, Edmond, OK. 10/1/11

I realized yesterday, as I strolled down each aisle of my local farmer’s market, that harvest has not nearly come to a close.  Nor has it in my own garden.  Aside from the fact that we have seen very little moisture, the weather is grand for fruits and vegetables.  And, our water supply is still giving, so we’re still getting.  I’ve decided to share just a few photos of the beautiful harvest I’ve seen over the last month or so…some is mine, some is other producers’.

Enjoy – and have a wonderful Silent Sunday, [kelly]

Sand Hill Vineyards ~ Wines sold at the Edmond Farmer's Market 10/1/11. This vineyard works in conjunction with Redlands Community College to provide a 2-year certificate or degree program in viticulture.

Some of my own "Better Boy" tomatoes, early August, 2011.
Okra and purple peas. Part of the local offerings available from the Urban Agrarian. 10/1/11
Every time I cut rhubarb, I'm stumped with this question: compote, crisp or pie? "Pie" won this time.
I just pulled some lovely carrots this week from my own garden. 9/28/11
Thousands of blooms are dotting my tomato plants for a "promises, promises" type situation...but, there is evidence of hope!
I made an amazing pepper and grape chutney for my spareribs from grapes I purchased at the Farmer's Market (OSU OKC location). These grapes came from Blanchard, OK ~ Berry Creek Farms. I believe they are Mars and Vanessa varieties.
Heirloom tomatoes will be among my garden as long as I can spare the space. I love the tangy twist of a green zebra, or the lucious bite of a black cherry tom. Romas...meh, I can take them or leave them. They come up voluntarily every year and I don't have the heart to pull them.
